Gene

α-Cat

Species
Drosophila melanogaster
Symbol
α-Cat
Name
alpha Catenin
Synonyms
  • a-cat
  • a-Cat
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Predicted to enable actin filament binding activity and beta-catenin binding activity. Involved in several processes, including apical constriction; dorsal closure, amnioserosa morphology change; and head morphogenesis. Located in adherens junction and plasma membrane. Part of catenin complex. Is expressed in several structures, including adult neuromere; epithelium; gut section; imaginal disc; and presumptive embryonic/larval system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia 13; complex cortical dysplasia with other brain malformations; and patterned macular dystrophy 2. Orthologous to several human genes including CTNNA2 (catenin alpha 2).
FB Description
alpha Catenin (alpha-Cat) encodes a protein which interacts with scrib to sustain apicobasal polarity of epithelial cells. Cooperation between alpha-Cat, scrib and a complex of septate junctions regulates epithelial tissue growth through interaction with the Hippo pathway.
