Gene

ifa-4

Species
Caenorhabditis elegans
Symbol
ifa-4
Name
Intermediate Filament, A 4
Synonyms
  • Cel IF A4
  • CELE_K05B2.3
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Predicted to be a structural constituent of cytoskeleton. Predicted to be involved in several processes, including heterochromatin formation; nucleus organization; and protein localization to nuclear envelope. Predicted to be located in intermediate filament. Predicted to be active in nuclear envelope and nuclear lamina. Is expressed in several structures, including egg-laying apparatus; excretory cell; pharyngeal-intestinal valve; rectum; and spermathecal-uterine valve cell. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in partial lipodystrophy; primary autosomal recessive microcephaly; and progressive myoclonus epilepsy 9. Orthologous to human LMNB2 (lamin B2).
WB Description
IFA-4 encodes a nonessential intermediate filament protein that is coexpressed with the essential IF protein IFB-1; IFA-4 binds IFB-1 in blot overlay assays; ifa-4 is expressed in larvae in the pharyngeal-intestinal valve, the rectum, some neurons of the tail, the excretory cell, and the intestine of dauer (but not nondauer) larvae; IFA-4 has no function in RNAi assays.
