Gene

Smox

Species
Drosophila melanogaster
Symbol
Smox
Name
Smad on X
Synonyms
  • CG2262
  • dSmad
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Enables chromatin DNA binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cell surface receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling pathway; imaginal disc-derived wing morphogenesis; and nervous system development. Located in cytosol and nucleus. Part of heteromeric SMAD protein complex. Is expressed in several structures, including embryonic anal pad; embryonic/larval midgut; ganglia; germline cell; and larval muscle cell. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Loeys-Dietz syndrome (multiple); Lynch syndrome; female reproductive organ cancer (multiple); and pancreatic cancer. Orthologous to human SMAD2 (SMAD family member 2) and SMAD3 (SMAD family member 3).
FB Description
Smad on X (Smox) encodes the primary transcription factor that mediates Activin signalling. Upon phosphorylation by the receptor encoded by babo, it forms a complex with the co-Smad protein encoded by Med. This complex translocates to the nucleus where it regulates expression of target genes.
