Gene

VGlut1

Species
Drosophila melanogaster
Symbol
VGlut1
Name
Vesicular glutamate transporter 1
Synonyms
  • CG9887
  • Drosophila Vesicular Glutamate Transporter
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Enables neurotransmitter transmembrane transporter activity. Involved in several processes, including glutamatergic synaptic transmission; positive regulation of neuromuscular synaptic transmission; and regulation of membrane potential in photoreceptor cell. Located in synaptic vesicle. Is expressed in several structures, including ganglia; neurons; organism subdivision; synaptic neuropil domain; and synaptic neuropil subdomain. Used to study Parkinson's disease and neurodegenerative disease. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in autosomal dominant nonsyndromic deafness 25. Orthologous to several human genes including SLC17A7 (solute carrier family 17 member 7) and SLC17A8 (solute carrier family 17 member 8).
FB Description
Vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGlut1) encodes a glutamate transporter belonging to SLC family of transporters. It localizes to synaptic vesicles in either glutamatergic or dopaminergic nerve terminals. It has been associated with neurodegenerative processes, regulation of basal and stimulant-induced locomotion, as well as the loading of glutamate and dopamine neurotransmitters into synaptic vesicles and vesicle co-transmission.
