sli

Species
Drosophila melanogaster
Symbol
sli
Name
slit
Synonyms
  • CG33464
  • CG43758
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Enables Roundabout binding activity and heparin binding activity. Involved in several processes, including heart development; neurogenesis; and regulation of cell migration. Located in axon; cell surface; and extracellular region. Part of Slit-Robo signaling complex. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; ganglia; glial cell; larval multidendritic neurons; and tract. Orthologous to human SLIT1 (slit guidance ligand 1); SLIT2 (slit guidance ligand 2); and SLIT3 (slit guidance ligand 3).
FB Description
slit (sli) encodes a secreted glycoprotein that acts as a ligand for the Robo receptor family and co-receptors, including the products of Sdc and Dscam1. The product of sli functions as second messenger (via Abl) and receptor dependent, providing repellent (neural growth cone), attractive (trachea), and polarising (cardioblasts) cues for differentiating cells.
