Gene

PLTP

Species
Homo sapiens
Symbol
PLTP
Name
phospholipid transfer protein
Synonyms
  • BPI fold containing family E
  • BPIFE
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Enables several functions, including lipid transfer activity; lipoprotein particle binding activity; and phospholipid binding activity. Involved in several processes, including glycolipid transport; high-density lipoprotein particle remodeling; and positive regulation of cholesterol efflux. Located in extracellular region and nucleus. Part of high-density lipoprotein particle. Biomarker of atherosclerosis.
RGD Description
The protein encoded by this gene is one of at least two lipid transfer proteins found in human plasma. The encoded protein transfers phospholipids from triglyceride-rich lipoproteins to high density lipoprotein (HDL). In addition to regulating the size of HDL particles, this protein may be involved in cholesterol metabolism. At least two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
