Gene

coq-5

Species
Caenorhabditis elegans
Symbol
coq-5
Name
COenzyme Q (ubiquinone) biosynthesis 5
Synonyms
  • CELE_ZK652.9
  • ZK652.9
Biotype
protein coding gene
Automated Description
Predicted to enable 2-polyprenyl-6-methoxy-1,4-benzoquinone methyltransferase activity. Involved in ubiquinone biosynthetic process. Predicted to be located in mitochondrial inner membrane. Predicted to be extrinsic component of mitochondrial inner membrane. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in primary coenzyme Q10 deficiency 9. Orthologous to human COQ5 (coenzyme Q5, methyltransferase).
WB Description
coq-5 encodes a putative 2-hexaprenyl-6-methoxy-1,4-benzoquinonemethyltransferase, homologous to COQ5 in S. cerevisiae and to a family ofmethyltransferases involved in ubiquinone, menaquinone, biotin and sterolbiosynthesis and in phosphatidylethanolamine methylation; COQ-5 isrequired for ubiquinone (coenzyme Q9) biosynthesis and for normally shortlifespan; coq-5 can transgenically rescue a coq-5 deletion in S.cerevisiae; coq-5(RNAi) animals have reduced levels of coenzyme Q9 andsuperoxide, and have abnormally long lifespans.
