Enables thymidylate synthase activity. Involved in dTMP biosynthetic process. Predicted to be active in cytosol and mitochondrion. Is expressed in body wall musculature; gonad; nerve ring; and terminal bulb. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in several diseases, including abdominal aortic aneurysm; digenic dyskeratosis congenita; gastrointestinal system cancer (multiple); hematologic cancer (multiple); and rheumatoid arthritis. Orthologous to human TYMS (thymidylate synthetase).
WB Description
tyms-1 encodes the C. elegans thymidylate synthase ortholog; by homology, TYMS-1 is predicted to function in dTMP biosynthesis and thus in DNA synthesis; when expressed as a recombinant protein TYMS-1 exhibits thymidylate synthase activity in vitro, and this activity is negatively regulated by tyrosine nitration; analysis of crude C. elegans extracts indicates that thymidylate synthase activity is present in L1, L3, and dauer larval stages, as well as in adult animals.
